Our Santarem forest plots before and after the fires

Seven of our ECOFOR GEM intensive forest plots in Brazil have experienced fire in the past two months. This includes old growth forests and previously logged forests.

Now what are the implications? Good? Bad? Natural cycle? Crazy climate change destabilizing the Amazon?

The fires really have been extensive this year, but have been much less reported than those in Indonesia. The immediate cause is the drought caused by the strong El Nino, but the underlying cause is that this fragmented, logged and hunted forest landscape is much more vulnerable to catching fire than the preceding more intact and continuous humid forests were.
